Plan-4-Surgery: Shared Decision Making (SDM) for the Perioperative Clinician
This workshop will provide you with the tools and knowledge to communicate effectively with patients about their values and beliefs in the context of upcoming surgery. This paves the way for further Advance Care Planning (ACP) discussions. Given we are seeing increasing complex surgery being performed in high risk patients with multiple comorbidities, this is an area of importance facing all clinicians involved in the care of perioperative patients. This workshop will help to facilitate these difficult conversations by providing participants with a simple communications model they can utilise in their daily practice. This is a course that will benefit any perioperative health care worker interested in implementing a shared decision making model into their workplace, where the direction of a patient’s treatment journey is jointly determined by the patient and their physician.
Please note that this workshop is running in conjunction with the 2020 Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Austin Health Perioperative Medicine Symposium.

This one-day workshop will help you acquire the skills to engage your high-risk surgical patients in Shared Decision Making. Participants will be provided with practical models of how Shared Decision Making can be incorporated into the care of high-risk surgical patients both before and after surgery. They will also learn communication skills that will help them initiate these difficult conversations. This will be followed by an afternoon of experiential learning facillitated by professional actors and communication-skills experts.
This workshop is suited to all clinicians, nurses, allied health staff and trainees who work with patients in the perioperative period and want to increase their communication skills to discuss issues relating to Shared Decision Making and Advance Care Planning.

Dr Debra Leung
Debra is a staff specialist anaesthetist at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Her academic and clinical interest lies in Shared Decision Making (SDM) for high-risk surgical patients. From this, she has established a SDM pathway for high risk surgical patients at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
She has also headed up a project, working in conjunction with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) Perioperative Medicine SIG and the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCOA) in the UK, to produce the first short animated film to increase patient understanding and engagement about perioperative shared decision making. This film will be officially launched at the Perioperative Medicine SIG meeting in November 2019.
In 2017, Debra convened the first “SDM for the Perioperative Clinician Workshop”. Since then the remit of the workshop has expanded to include a greater emphasis on communication skills to facilitate clinicians delivering SDM in their own institutions. This has led to a partnership with the Centre for Organisational Change in Person-Centred Healthcare. She is also currently undertaking a Masters of Medicine by research examining the use of patient focus groups to redesign surgical risk and shared decision making aids for surgical patients.

Peter has been involved with communication skills training for 20+ years and has been a clinician for 30 years. His clinical interest is cancer cachexia. He has taught communication skills with Cambridge, Monash, Melbourne and Deakin medical schools. He has taught at numerous postgraduate courses with a variety of health professional disciplines nationally over the last 15+ years.
Since becoming the Director of OCPH he has developed and run numerous 1,2 or 3-day courses on healthcare communication including numerous train-the-trainer courses. He is an investigator in an organisational level intervention called iValidate which targets altering conversations for patients with a life limiting illness. The OCPH’s most recent intervention is another organisational level intervention to drive person-centred healthcare communication called Your Thoughts Matter.
Peter has chaired the policy / practice sub-group (pEACH) of EACH (www.each.eu) (www.each.eu/practice) since 2017.

Ms Meg Chiswell
Deputy Director, Centre for Organisational Change in Person-Centred Healthcare, Deakin University, Faculty of Health
Meg originally worked as a Radiation Therapist and educator at RMIT University in Melbourne before moving into strategic oversight of programs at Cancer Council Victoria including 13 11 20 Cancer Information and Support, Cancer Education and Peer Support Programs, and the Victorian Cancer Clinicians Communication Program.
Meg has been instrumental in building communication skills programs for health professionals and non-clinical staff working with cancer patients in Victoria. Meg has personally delivered more than 100 experiential healthcare communication skills programs to over 600 professionals.
Meg is a member of the International Association for Communication in Healthcare (EACH) and is the Australian representative on the teaching subcommittee (tEACH) for this group. In 2016, Meg convened the inaugural Teaching Communication in Healthcare Conference and Education Program in partnership with EACH and the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services, bringing together more than 120 local and international delegates. Following the success of these events, Meg has worked closely with Peter Martin to establish and lead the Australian tEACH network for communication skills educators in healthcare.
